In Luke 14, Jesus gets invited to a high-status dinner party on the Sabbath where everyone is subtly watching Him—surveilling Him to see what He’ll do. Our culture teaches us a very specific blueprint for "success" and value: it’s about status, climbing the social ladder, and making sure the "who's who" see what you're doing. We have little catchphrases like "fake it till you make it" or "it’s not what you know, it’s who you know." But Jesus flips the entire narrative upside down. He looks at a man suffering from edema (dropsy) whom the religious elite viewed as a low-value "prop" or an afterthought, and He asserts: This guy matters.
